A Rant on Music

A Rant on Music
Was no iphone for me
Nor CDs or MP3 ers
in my youth was cassettes
the ubiquitous LP record
and the radio static eaping
from self installed speakers
you learnt a lot about things
which you never needed to know
which was the best speaker
the depth of the bass magnets
how to re-reel a loose cassette
to lower the stylus with care
if you wanted music you did
of course the benefit was
you could make your own mix tape
complete with the annoying
voice-overs of radio announcers
who cared not if a song was finished
or halfway through starting
if they could throw in an inane comment
which would live forever more on your tape
and after constant re-listenings
would become fixed in your own memory
so every time you heard the song
you heard their comment in your head
and now the music comes digital
from a pale flat reen
and often sounds unoriginal
you re the days of albums
where each song a chapter in a story
now lucky if a single song is a hit
a few big stars the rest are anonymous
driven to poverty and oburity
by the new big business model
of digital platform to stream
every song and obstruct every musician's dream
there was the old business model of course
and that took advantage of those same artists
who sang and wrote and ed the music
however at least they registered as a presence
performed live shows and needed
cover art bright for album covers
now to remain in the public eye
they need to appear on televised talent shows
creating the processed servile stars of tomorrow
any from yesteryear can only look on with sorrow
the rebellion is now corporately directed
and the anger manufactured in a sound booth
by accountants following music polls
so it is not surprising the few real stars
those who climb above the commercial muck
are those who independently make their way
the rough diamonds who polish themselves
by the 10,000 hours of practice and performance
who often live their lyrics and dress
as if they were not corporate citizens
but eapees from a prison farm
on the run from ordered society
from the corporate lawyers
and from what the music industry has become....

Oh my! I remember my brother getting a new car with a built in 8 track player! I remember getting my 1st cassette recorder and thinking I had the world by the tail! Then a "real" stereo record player with speakers. Oh how I am dating myself!!
there is a certain tinge of sadness, when on a dating site, you are dating yourself

I recall those weird eight track, they were always for "serious music" people, and I still have stashed away a practically unused bright waterproof walkman I bought just before as the CD era was being launched....(prior to that....well, everything.....and of course when a teenager yearning for a big radio/cassette player, which had a handle, and you carried like a briefcase!!!)

    Quoting  :

I find myself gathering up CDs, as they feel like they will last, one day.....some day.....the laptop will die, or the internet crash, or ITunes self-destruct, and all that digital music will cease to exist.....then I will slide a CD into a CD player, settle back, and listen to the only music in the world*.

*other than your LPs of course

You are putting me in a mood of nostalgic sadness thinking about such music realities.
the very good news is nostalgic sadness is for wallowing in, and then using as fuel for telling those younger whippersnappers how it was so much better in my day....and for all their new-fangled gadgets, and widgets, the music was better, the air cleaner, the water sparkly-er.....

and I will say, to those to slow to escape my aging, old, grumpy reflections....I remember when music was live, not algorithms digitally supplied to suppress the rebellious thoughts of the young. ....
